Getting a job in Canada in 2024: 6 keys to successGetting a job in Canada in 2024: 6 keys to success

Canada is a country that is open to receive migrants from all over the world to come and work in an environment that offers a high quality of life; in addition, it is well known that there is a great need for labor in different areas, however, the application process is demanding and all foreigners who wish to start their migratory path to this beautiful country must comply with the step by step requirements of the law.

Hello! My name is Eddy Ramirez and, in this Immiland Canada article, I want to give you details of the steps to follow to be successful in your job search in Canada. Below, I describe the three main aspects you should take into account and the key to get a job offer.

The job offer, the LMIA and the work visa

While having a job offer is essential to start the application for a work visa, it is very important to obtain the economic impact assessment, better known as positive LMIA or LMIA exemption, the latter covers the following countries: Mexico, Panama, Chile, Peru and Colombia, which are exempt from the LMIA because they have an agreement with Canada, or Free Trade Agreement(FTA). Countries that do require the positive LMIA face a more complex negotiation process to convince the potential employer of the need to generate this assessment and send it to the government.

Once you have obtained these two elements, you must apply for the work visa and support your information with documents that prove your level of knowledge and experience in your profession, for this you must review the IRCC requirements and verify that you meet the levels of occupational classification (NOC) and education, experience and responsibility (TEERS), which requires that you have a university or college degree to occupy the job, as well as experience in the field. In this official link you can check your NOC and TEERS.

How to get the job offer?

The following are tips you should consider when looking for and finding a job offer in Canada.

  1. The first thing to keep in mind is that there are two official languages spoken in Canada, English and French, so you must be able to speak either of these two languages at a conversational level, i.e. speak, write and understand it well in order to have a good interview with your potential employer. In the province of Quebec and some communities, French is officially spoken, so this region works very well for French speakers. Now, in recent months the Canadian government has been increasingly prioritizing internationals with this French language proficiency and is expanding its openness to offer permanent residency in other provinces such as Ontario, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, etc. This is very valuable if you are planning your immigration route to Canada, at Immiland, we always recommend to master English and French to have more opportunities. In fact, we have an academy that helps you to level your French or your English and we prepare you for the certified tests, click here to learn more.‍

  2. Know the immigration laws that cover you. You must know which immigration plan fits your profile and can bring you to Canada, this way you can explain to your potential employer your real situation of entry to the country. This includes knowing if your country has any agreements such as, for example, NAFTA, the Atlantic Program, if you apply for Express Entry, etc. Explore the official pages of the Canadian government to know the variety of immigration plans that exist. At Immiland Canada, we have a multitude of videos on this topic, you can even request a completely free evaluation to know what option you have, you can also schedule an immigration consultation with a regulated consultant.‍

  3. Know in which city to apply. Each province in Canada has its own economic characteristic and you should know which of them requires labor in your professional area.‍

  4. Make a good resume, as this is the first impression that your potential employer will have of you. For this very important point, we recommend you to explore the web and consult the characteristics of the Canadian CV. On our Immiland social networks, there is a lot of free information with tips on how to make a Canadian-style resume. In this YouTube video you can start your search, we also offer personalized assessment to review your CV and negotiate with your employer, if the case requires it. For an appointment with our specialized team, click here. Also, channel your job search through official platforms such as Indeed or LinkedIn.‍

  5. Be patient, the process to find the job that will bring you to Canada can take up to 6 months, do not be in a hurry, as there are many unregulated consultants and also scammers that can take advantage of your urgency and will take money from you. Remember that there are offers available, it is just a matter of making a good search, apply with the requirements of the law and wait for your contract to arrive. If time passes and you do not find a job offer, then you can try to make your application through Express Entry, if you are a professional with demonstrable experience and fluent in English or French.

  6. If you do not get the job offer even if you fulfill the above points, then save enough money (CAD 20,000.00 to cover at least one year of study), learn well or improve your level of English or French and opt for the study path, but know that this year 2024 there are changes in the law for international students and your profile must be optimal. Read our most recent article on this topic here.

There is more detailed information for the countries that have the FTA agreement with Canada, it is very important to consult it in this YouTube video, since it will guide you even more in the search process so that your application to the job offer is successful. I hope these keys will be useful and that you will get the job you are looking for.
