Changes to PGWP-eligible programs for prospective international students in Canada

Changes to PGWP-eligible programs for prospective international students in CanadaChanges to PGWP-eligible programs for prospective international students in Canada

On June 25, 2025, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced important changes for prospective international students at colleges, who will now only be able to access the Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) if their program is in an eligible area of study linked to long-term shortage occupations, such as those prioritized by the Express Entry system.

Want to work in Canada after graduating from college? Read with me to the end and learn about the list of currently eligible fields of study and how to access Immiland Education's educational services for certified advice on the right career choice. Let's get started!

What are the new changes and who is affected?

On June 25, 2025, the Canadian government updated the list of eligible fields of study, with the addition of 119 new fields in Canada's labor-shortage sectors, such as health care and social services, education and trade.

It also eliminated 178 fields of study that were no longer linked to long-term labor shortage occupations. So, as of the date of publication of this article, there are now 920 fields of study to choose from that are conducive to the Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP).

Who is affected by this change?

This change affects all international students who apply for a study permit on or after June 25, 2025.

Also those who will study in a college, whose career was eliminated, and have not yet applied for a study permit. In this case, what they should do is to change their major. If they are not sure which one is the most suitable to align with Canada's priority needs, it is important to seek educational counseling.

Who is NOT affected by the change?

This update does not affect:

  • International students of master's, bachelor's or PhD degrees.
  • Internationals who will study at a college, but applied for a study permit before June 25, 2025.
