We know that immigration terms are often complicated, which is why we have decided to clarify the difference between an extension of status and restoration of status.

Under the Canadian immigration system, when you come to Canada as a tourist, student and/or worker you can extend your stay in Canada, as long as you can prove to the Canadian Government that you have valid reasons for doing so and that you have sufficient financial resources to support yourself in Canada.

Visa extension

It means that you are applying to extend your authorized status in Canada. The extension must be made 30 days before your permit in Canada expires.

Supporting documents for an extension application must be submitted digitally, and we strongly recommend that you use scanned images in PDF format and not photographs.

Restoration of status

If your temporary status in Canada (e.g., a study permit) has expired and you did not apply for an extension before the expiry date, you must apply to restore your status within 90 days of the expiration date if you wish to remain in Canada.

You can apply if:

  • You lost your temporary resident status (e.g., as a student) because you stayed in Canada longer than the authorized period of stay, not to exceed 90 days.
  • That you continue to meet the initial requirements for your stay in Canada and have not failed to comply with any other conditions imposed.
  • You may remain in Canada after applying for reinstatement, but you will not be able to study or work in Canada until your application for reinstatement has been approved.

Please note that when applying for an extension of status or reinstatement the decision will be 100% up to IRCC whether your student status can be restored.
