What should be included in the letter of motivation for your study permit in Canada?
May is usually a busy month for international students applying for their study permit with the excitement of starting classes in September, and while many succeed with flying colors, others are rejected because they did not prepare well enough to convince the immigration officer with valid reasons in their letter of motivation.
In the year 2024, announcements have been made by IRCC about the reduction in the number of applications that the country will accept for international students coming for the first time to pursue an undergraduate degree, which is why applicants should be very careful when preparing and submitting their documentation for the study permit and temporary visa.
In this Immiland article, we will describe three reasons why the Canadian government may reject your application and how to do a letter of explanation of reasons correctly so that you will be successful. Remember that the student visa and the study permit are different, but for both these reasons for refusal apply, and what are these reasons, continue reading below.
First reason for rejection: purpose of the trip
Does not know how to explain the purpose of the trip: when an applicant applies for a study visa, he/she must explain in a letter of motives, also called motivation letter, why he/she wants to come to Canada, but many times the applicant is not clear about the reason for this trip and gives reasons such as: "the country offers a good quality of life, has the social security I am looking for for me and my children", among other similar reasons. This is not valid, as it is not sustainable enough for the Canadian government. Instead, what would be the valid explanation?
Recommended explanation of reasons
In this case, what is valid is to relate the educational career you are going to study in Canada with your academic or work background in your country of origin, and explain how this career will help you in your future professional development so that the officer understands more objectively the reason for your trip.
Second reason for rejection: economic funds
Failure to demonstrate that you have enough money: your student visa may be denied if your bank statements, in a recognized bank in your home country or abroad, do not reflect sufficient liquid savings available. It is not valid to demonstrate accounts in bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies, nor cash, it must be an account in dollars. It does not work either to demonstrate economic funds in movable or real estate, etc. It must be liquid and available money.
Recommendation to demonstrate sufficient cash
The applicant of the study visa must demonstrate two solvencies, the first year of study in full (if it is two or three years of study, only the first year of study has to be demonstrated) and the maintenance of his daily expenses (and those of his family, in case they travel together).
Although the IRCC has adjusted this year the international student's financial funds to CAD 20,635.00; at Immiland, we recommend that you always add an additional CAD 5,000.00 or 6,000.00 to that minimum amount, since the more solvency you demonstrate, the better chance you have of successfully passing this requirement in front of the official one. Remember that your family members applying with you will give you more solvency.
Third reason for rejection: no reason to return home
Failure to demonstrate roots in your country of origin: when an international student applies for a study visa, it is temporary, i.e. it is subject to a stay with a date of arrival and return to your country of origin. Therefore, this consistency must also be reflected in your letter of motivation, if there are no elements that demonstrate that you have compelling reasons to leave Canada once your permit expires, it will be rejected . Even if you have a dual intention, because the immigration officer may assume that you are not necessarily going to get permanent residency, so the applicant must be respectful of the temporality of your visa. Recommendations for demonstrating roots
Arraigo is demonstrated with documentation that truthfully reflects the intention to return to your homeland because your family is there, you have a job offer or possibilities of finding one or reintegrate in the one you already had before traveling, all this must be demonstrated with documentation, you can also add your personal and real estate assets in your name. The more elements of roots you have, the more possibilities you will have to have your application considered.
So far we share these three basic reasons why your profile may be rejected when applying for a study visa and the three recommendations that Immiland gives you to have a better chance of success.
