Biometrics, police records and medical examination
Instructions for work permit outside Canada
Are you applying for a work permit outside of Canada? If so, this article will be of interest to you, as it deals with three requirements that you must meet before the IRCC and are very important for your work permit, I am referring to your biometrics, police record and medical examination. Attention with this point: workers who are inside Canada are exempt. Specifically, we are referring to the out-of-country permit.
Below, the Immiland team shares important instructions from the government so that your work permit process outside Canada meets all requirements and avoids any delays or inconveniences. Let's get started!
IRCC Instructions for Work Permit Requirements
Biometrics
You must provide your biometric data when you apply for your work permit, unless you are exempt. Follow these steps:
- Provide your photo and fingerprints.
- Pay the individual application fee of $85 CAD (Families applying at the same time pay a maximum total fee of $170 CAD).
- After payment, obtain the biometric instruction letter (BIL).
- Confirm that you need to provide your biometric data and check the place and date of your appointment.
- When you go to your biometrics appointment, bring these two documents with you:
- Your BIL
- Your valid passport

Police records
A police record or criminal record, as it is known in other countries, is a certificate that proves whether or not a person is a security risk in Canada.
It is quite possible that visa officers will ask you for this certificate, depending on the location of your application, as well as you may need authorizations from countries where you have lived for more than 6 months after the age of 18.

Medical examination
Depending on the length of stay, residency and occupation, foreigners may require a medical examination.
Generally, for stays of less than 6 months, it is not required unless the work involves close contact with people or is related to agriculture. Longer stays may require an examination based on residency or work criteria.
Applicants may opt for an initial medical examination by coordinating with a designated physician on the IRCC website. If not submitted with the application, IRCC will provide instructions and a deadline for completion at a later date.

LMIA (Labor Market Impact Assessment)
Delay in processing the application for a work permit
One of the most well-known requirements for working in Canada is the Labour Market Impact Assessment, better known as LMIA.
- The processing time for LMIA applications will depend on what type it is, whether it is regular or simplified, as the simplified LMIA is unique to Quebec.
- Regular LMIA processing occurs on a case-by-case basis, with varying turnaround times. Typically, a minimum of five months is required for a regular LMIA application.
- Employers eligible for Canada's Global Talent Stream can benefit from expedited LMIA processing. The simplified LMIA for employment in Quebec is generally processed in two to three months.
Canadian immigration news, currently, there is a freeze on new temporary foreign workers for low-wage jobs in Montreal, changes are expected as of September 2024.

- While Canadian employers do not technically "sponsor" candidates to work in Canada, they can facilitate the hiring of foreign workers with an LMIA or by submitting an electronic job offer (LMIA exempt categories).
- The LMIA or electronic job offer is a basic requirement for any Canadian employer seeking to hire a foreign worker.
- Once an employer obtains an LMIA or electronic job offer, they will have taken a step forward in the Canadian work permit application process.
Another fundamental requirement is the language
To apply for a Canadian work permit, while it is NOT a requirement to take the IELTS test or any other language test, the job offer may require skills in French and/or English and, if the applicant is from a non-French or English-speaking country, then it may be necessary to provide evidence of language skills, such as a language test, as required by the reviewing officer.
