REM, light rail under construction in Greater Montreal
The REM is the largest public transportation project undertaken in Québec in the last fifty years. The first trains are scheduled to start running in 2021 from South Shore to Bonaventure-Central Station. The other lines of the network will then be gradually put into service in 2022-2023.
One of the major benefits of this major project will be the connection between the airport and downtown Montreal, which can be completed in approximately 20 minutes. With the REM station at the airport, travelers will be able to cross the city without worrying about traffic. People living outside Montreal (Pierrefonds, Île des Sœurs, Brossard, Kirkland, etc.) will also benefit from this new means of transportation.
The REM will be 100% electric, will have connections to 3 metro stations and will be in service for 20 hours a day, 7 days a week. The REM technology will be fully automated, the trains will be driverless and will be managed by a control center.
