Super visa to bring parents and/or grandparents to Canada
How long has it been since you have been reunited with your parents or grandparents? The love of family is the most important thing to lead a fulfilling life, and it is beautiful to see how after years of not seeing or embracing each other many residents are reunited with the people they love the most and to whom they owe their existence. In this Immiland article, we bring you valuable information on how to bring your parents and/or grandparents to the warmth of your home in Canada.
Are you a permanent resident or Canadian citizen and want to bring your parents and/or grandparents?
If the answer is yes, then good news, there are ways to do it and one of them is through a special visa called super visa.
How long does the super visa last?
This permit provides multiple entries to Canada for a period of up to 10 years. In this respect, the super visa differs from the multiple entry visa in that the foreigner can stay for 5 continuous years in Canada, then leave and re-enter for 5 more years, whereas a 10-year multiple entry visa only allows a period of stay for each entry of 6 months.
Now, the date you apply for your super visa may affect your stay in Canada because if you file your application on or after June 22, 2023, then you are eligible to stay for 5 years at a time. Conversely, if you filed your application before June 22, 2023, your date of entry into Canada before June 22 will determine a stay equal to the time the border officer granted you when you entered Canada.
Who is eligible for the super visa?
Those parents or grandparents who:
- Have a child or grandchild who is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada.
- They have a letter of invitation to Canada signed by their child or grandchild, which includes a promise of financial support during the time of their visit, the number of people in the household, as well as a copy of the permanent residency or Canadian citizenship document. This letter of invitation must be written by the child or grandchild, indicating his or her good faith and true intention to bring his or her parents, and that he or she is sure that he or she can fulfill what is promised in the letter. (Note that you may be asked to have your letter certified by a notary public).
- Have private health insurance in or outside Canada that is valid at the time of entry into the country.
What should you know about financial solvency?
For the Canadian government, it is imperative that the applicant for the super visa has sufficient funds to cover the expenses of their parents or grandparents, as well as their family nucleus, i.e. partner and children under 22 years of age. Otherwise, your visa will be rejected.
As we have mentioned previously in other publications, all the documents you have on hand to prove that you have economic support work and the immigration officer will carefully evaluate this aspect. Make sure you can present, for example, a letter of employment that includes salary, job title and job description, as well as date of hire; you can also show pay stubs, bank statements, among others.
Note that the Canadian government, in addition to the applicant's finances and economic stability, looks at the general policy of the applicant's parents' or grandparents' country of origin.
Whatto do after writing the invitation letter?
You should send the letter (notarized if required) to your parents or grandparents and they should send it to the Canadian embassy or consulate outside Canada when you apply for a temporary resident visa.
In the following link of the IRCC website, you can find more details about the invitation letter by clicking here.
What other immigration avenues are there to bring in parents or grandparents besides the super visa?
In addition to the super visa, which can only be applied for by permanent residents or Canadian citizens, there are two other ways to bring your parents and/or grandparents.
In the case of temporary residents, they may bring their parents or grandparents with a tourist visa, for which they must comply with the basic requirements of having traveled to other countries, having assets and/or property in their country of origin, being retired, demonstrating economic solvency and, in short, everything that guarantees their genuine intention to leave the country on the date stipulated by their visa, which is for six months, extendable for another six months.
The other way to bring your parents or grandparents is through a sponsorship. sponsorshipHowever, you should know that this route is managed through a lottery that the Canadian government launches annually and the number of visas available is about 80,000, so the chances of being selected are not guaranteed given the high demand of applications that exist.
What to do if your visa is denied?
There is always the possibility that your visa will be rejected, but you should know that you can reapply and that at the right time your visa may be approved. Therefore, do not lose hope because this is how it happens in the immigration process. It is important to make sure that you meet the eligibility criteria mentioned above and that you do not have serious reasons to be considered inadmissible by the Canadian government. In the following link, you will find detailed information to know the causes that the immigration officer will find to declare a foreigner inadmissible to the super visa or the tourist visa or eTa, click here.
