Prime Minister, President or Queen of Canada: who rules the country?Prime Minister, President or Queen of Canada: who rules the country?

In Canada, there is the political figure of the prime minister as the leader of the nation, unlike in most countries, where the leaders are presidents. While both positions are very similar and concentrate decision-making power within the country, there are also characteristics that distinguish a prime minister from a president. If you are planning to come to Canada, it would be very good for you to know a little about its political system, so we invite you to read this article to understand the peculiarities of its state hierarchy.

Prime Minister

A prime minister has a legislative majority. In a parliamentary system, the prime minister sets the national agenda, appoints cabinet officials and governs at the behest of a party or coalition of parties, and oversees the country's policies. The prime minister can be removed by a motion of no confidence if he or she loses majority support.

Chairman

A president is the head of state and ceremonial or symbolic figurehead of the country. His or her functions may include duties such as being the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, signing laws, representing the country in international affairs, and acting as the moral leader of the nation. In some cases, the president may also have considerable executive powers. In parliamentary systems, presidents act as primarily ceremonial heads of state.

King/Queen

In constitutional monarchies, these roles are played by the king or queen. In the event that a prime minister loses his or her legislative mandate, opposition parties may call for a vote of confidence in an effort to oust the incumbent government. While the queen may be Canada's head of state and the governor general the ceremonial deputy in case the queen is indisposed, it is the prime minister who actually rules the country. Do you know who was Canada's queen until 2022 and who succeeds her today? Read about Canada's monarchy here.

The Prime Minister occupies one of the most powerful leadership positions in any Western democracy, which means that much of Canadian political life revolves around his actions and decisions. Some of the achievements of Canadian ministers in favor of the population include the Climate Agreement to limit global warming, progressive taxation, economic investment in education, infrastructure and housing, among others.

This year 2023, the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, made a cabinet reshuffle and, among other positions, appointed lawyer Marc Miller as the new Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, replacing Sean Fraser, who is now the Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities. There have been several announcements this year regarding favorable projections for immigrants seeking to come to Canada, we invite you to read the article Minister Miller's Statement on Canada's commitment to support migrants in the Americas.
