Parental and grandparent sponsorship in Canada will not be available in 2025

Parental and grandparent sponsorship in Canada will not be available in 2025Parental and grandparent sponsorship in Canada will not be available in 2025

The issue ofsponsorship of parents and grandparents in Canada has always been a complex issue with changing processes. For years, this program has operated as a lottery, where opportunities for citizens and permanent residents to bring their loved ones depended on limited quotas and strict criteria.

Recently, the Canadian government announced the suspension of the sponsorship program. This means that if you are a permanent resident or Canadian citizen and were considering bringing your mother, father, grandmother or grandfather, you should know that thesponsorship pathway is no longer available!

Given this reality, what options are there for those who want their parents or grandparents to stay with them in Canada for an extended period of time? Read with me to the end and find out how the golden option works in Canada to bring our loved ones: the Super Visa!

What is Super Visa and how does it work?

The Super Visa is a visa that allows parents and grandparents of citizens or permanent residents to stay in Canada for a maximum of five consecutive years, with the possibility of extending their stay for an additional five years, for a total of ten years in the country.

Unlike the standard tourist visa, which only allows a stay of six months, extendable up to one year, the Super Visa provides a more stable solution for those who want their parents to stay with them for an extended period of time.

If the beneficiary leaves Canada after five years and re-enters, the permit is automatically renewed for another five years, thus allowing for an extended stay without the need to become a permanent resident.

Super Visa application requirements

If you wish to bring your parents or grandparents to Canada through the Super Visa, it is important that you meet certain essential criteria. These requirements involve both the applicant and the beneficiary:

  1. Applicant's requirements (child or grandchild in Canada)

You must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and be at least 18 years old. In addition, you need to demonstrate financial solvency, i.e. sufficient income to support your parents during your stay.

The Canadian government sets an income threshold based on the number of people in the household. In this case, if you live with your partner and wish to bring your mother, you need to check what the minimum income requirement is for a group of three people. This calculation is based on annual income, which may include the combined salaries of both partners.

Important fact: to prove financial solvency, documents such as a letter from your employer, indicating your annual income, and/or tax returns can be submitted.

  1. Beneficiary requirements (parents or grandparents traveling to Canada)

Parents or grandparents applying for the Super Visa must also meet certain criteria:

  • Be admissible to Canada (no criminal record).
  • Pass a medical examination, to ensure that your health status does not pose a risk to the Canadian health care system.
  • Have medical insurance valid for the period of stay, with a minimum coverage of 100,000 CAD for hospitalization and medical expenses. This insurance can be obtained in Canada or in the country of origin, as long as it is recognized by the Canadian government.

In addition, the traveler's passport must be valid for the full duration of the Super Visa. For example, if your passport expires in 2030 and you apply for the visa in 2025, you will only be granted five years instead of the possible ten.

To avoid this problem, it is recommended to extend the passport before applying.

Super Visa or Tourist Visa, which is more convenient?

If you are evaluating which option is best, you should consider several factors:

  • The tourist visa allows a maximum stay of six months, with possible extension up to one year. It is easier to obtain, but it requires proof of roots in the country of origin.
  • The Super Visa, on the other hand, does not evaluate the roots in the country of origin, allowing a longer stay without so many bureaucratic complications.

For those who have parents with little roots in their country of origin and wish to stay in Canada for an extended period of time, the Super Visa is the best alternative.

Why did you suspend the sponsorship of parents and grandparents?

This measure responds to a 20% reduction in the number of permanent residents in the country, which led to a decrease in family sponsorship quotas.

Starting in 2025, the number of applications will be limited to a maximum of 15,000 quotas in this year.
