DLI conducive to PGWP or not conducive to PGWP?

DLI conducive to PGWP or not conducive to PGWP?DLI conducive to PGWP or not conducive to PGWP?

Did you know that in Canada not all DLIs (Designated Learning Institutions) and not all programs of study allow you to obtain the Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP)? If an international student wants to, he/she can choose a program that does not lead to the PGWP, as he/she may not be interested in permanent residency.

In that case, once you graduate, you will simply return to your home country with your new academic degree to work there. However, there are some differences that can be assessed in terms of advantages regarding this permit in Canada and the designated institution that offers it, perhaps they will help you to reflect on your selection.

Today we will learn some differences between choosing a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) that will lead you to PGWP and one that will not. In the end you will be able to decide which one is more suitable for you. Read to the end and take note of these differences - let's get started!

What is a DLI?

A DLI, Designated Learning Institution, is a school approved by a provincial or territorial government in Canada to receive international students. Not all designated learning institutions and not all programs of study allow international students to participate in the Post-Graduate Work Permit Program (PGWP).

What is PGWP?

The PGWP is an open work permit that authorizes international graduates of designated learning institutions to work in Canada after completing their program of study. This permit can be for up to three years, depending on the length of the study program completed.

Why is it important to know if a DLI leads to PGWP?

Studying at a DLI that does not lead to a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) in Canada may be an option for certain international students who have specific academic and non-work objectives in the country or who have personal interests in other countries. But what about those students who fall in love with Canada while studying and want to stay and live? If their DLI does not lead to a work permit after graduation, they will have to leave at the end of their stay, otherwise they could be in breach of the law with bad consequences.

Criteria and advantages that may be involved in the choice of a DLI conducive to PGWP and one that is not.

Here are some important criteria:

DLI leading to PGWP

  1. Access to the Canadian labor market: by graduating from a DLI leading to the PGWP, you will have the opportunity to work in Canada and gain Canadian work experience, with which you may qualify for permanent residency through the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) program.

  1. Duration of the work permit: the PGWP can have a duration of up to three years, during which time you can do what is necessary to establish yourself professionally in Canada.

  1. Networking opportunities and professional growth: studying at a DLI leading to the PGWP allows access to networking events, internships and collaborations with Canadian companies. If a good offer comes along that represents economic growth for the student and his/her family, the PGWP will be a must to take it.

DLI not conducive to PGWP

  1. Work permit limitations: without the PGWP, opportunities to work in Canada after graduation are very limited, which can make it difficult to gain Canadian work experience.
  • Less time in Canada means less opportunity to demonstrate your skills and build a professional network.

  1. Restrictions on length of stay: without the PGWP, time in Canada is limited to the duration of your student visa, which reduces opportunities for long-term settlement in the country.
  • If the student changed his or her decision and wishes to stay longer in Canada, he or she will no longer be able to do so and must leave before he or she breaches the legal time limits.

  1. Reduced exposure to professional opportunities: DLIs that do not lead to the PGWP may offer fewer opportunities for internships and professional connections in Canada, which would limit the possibility of networking with professionals and companies that offer growth and development of further skills and experience.

Reflections for international students

As an international student, there is the freedom to choose a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) that allows access to the Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) or one that does not. This decision is a very personal one and is often in line with particular goals and expectations, others not so much, it is more a lack of knowledge that some regret.
