Great news for international students in Canada!
If you are already studying in Canada as an international student, or if you plan to do so soon, here's an important update that could positively affect you.
What has changed?
Extension of the temporary policy:
From November 15, 2022 until April 30, 2024, eligible international students may work off-campus for more than 20 hours per week. This extension provides more flexibility for students who are already in Canada and whose study permit applications were received by IRCC by October 7, 2022.
New policy in effect:
From January 1, 2024 through April 30, 2024, a new policy allows certain students to work off-campus for more than 20 hours per week. This policy applies to those whose study leave requests were received by IRCC between October 8, 2022 and December 7, 2023.
Who is eligible?
- International students enrolled full-time at a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada.
- Those whose study permit application has been received by IRCC before the deadline.
- Students who meet the eligibility criteria and are studying in a program of a minimum duration of 6 months leading to a degree, diploma or certificate.
- Former study permit holders with maintained status who applied to renew their study permit prior to their permit expiration and public policy deadline.
Who is not eligible?
- Students who are not enrolled full time in a DLI.
- Those whose study permit application was received by IRCC after the deadlines.
- Students enrolled in programs that do not meet minimum duration requirements or do not lead to a specific credential.
- Individuals who do not meet the eligibility criteria established by IRCC.
If you are already studying in Canada and are eligible for these policies you may have more flexibility to work off-campus and gain work experience while completing your studies. In addition, these upgrades can be an added advantage in your financial planning.
