In 2025, Yukon and Alberta, two Canadian provinces with very different characteristics, have revamped their immigration strategies to attract skilled foreign workers and facilitate their permanent settlement in the country.

If you are interested in applying for permanent residency in Canada, I invite you to read this blog to learn how the immigration nomination programs of these two provinces are working, so you will know which one best suits your profile and your chances of living in Canada. Let's get started!

Yukon: Territorial nomination with defined priorities

The Yukon Nominee Program (YNP) has launched its intake process with a quota of 215 migration slots available. This year, the territory is focusing on strategic profiles, which include:

  • Foreign workers with a supported temporary work permit.
  • Yukon residents with at least one year of work experience in the region.
  • Graduates of the University of Yukon
  • French-speaking candidates, especially those who have taken the TEF or TCF exam.

New Expression of Interest system (EOI)

Since 2025, employers are key in the nomination, as they must submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) to nominate their candidates for permanent residency. The Yukon government reviews applications and prioritizes profiles that are aligned with its labour needs before sending formal invitations.

This new scheme allows the YPN to manage the high demand for territorial nominations and focus on the candidates that best fit its economic and labor needs.

The next province is Alberta, which continues to boost the hotel and tourism sector through its Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP).

Alberta: Nomination drawings and job opportunities

In May 2025, Alberta conducted two draws under the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP), prioritizing the following strategic sectors:

  • May 15 Drawing - Tourism and Hospitality Stream, with 33 invitations issued and a minimum score of 72.
  • May 13 draw - Alberta Opportunity Stream, with 125 invitations issued and a minimum score of 76.

What is the Tourism and Hospitality Stream?

The Tourism and Hospitality Stream is an economic immigration pathway for the province of Alberta, which aims to address labour shortages in the sector. It is aimed at temporary foreign nationals who have an offer of full-time employment from a qualified Alberta employer in an eligible occupation within the hospitality industry.

To be eligible, candidates must have a positive Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) and also meet other minimum eligibility criteria, such as:

  • Have worked in a tourism and hospitality business in Alberta for at least six months.
  • Have a valid full-time job offer from an approved employer.
  • Meet the education and language requirements established by the program.

Differences and commonalities between Yukon and Alberta

Yukon is a territory located in the extreme northwest of Canada, with a small population and a subarctic climate. Its economy is based on mining, tourism and natural resources.

Alberta, in contrast, is a province with a diversified economy, driven by energy, agriculture and the technology sector. It is one of the most populous and dynamic regions in the country.

Both regions have one thing in common: they are offering provincial nomination programs to attract eligible and qualified foreign nationals, giving them the opportunity to work and settle permanently in Canada.

How to apply for these programs?

If you want to immigrate to Canada, the first thing to do is to know the requirements of each province and assess your eligibility. Both Yukon and Alberta are looking for profiles that contribute to economic development and cover areas with employment demand.

To successfully apply for any of these programs, it is advisable to consult with an immigration expert to help you properly prepare your documents and increase your chances of success.

What to do after obtaining permanent residency in Canada?

Obtaining permanent residency in Canada is a great achievement, but not everything ends there, the next step is to settle down successfully. Here are some recommendations:

  • Obtain your health card, open a Canadian bank account and apply for your Social Insurance Number (SIN).
  • Find ways to adapt to the new environment. Participate in community events and integration programs that will lead you to learn more about life in Canada.
  • If you want to improve your professional profile, consider specialization courses or recognized certifications in Canada.
  • Keep in touch with your immigration and legal advisors for a better integration into Canadian society.
