Do you want to study in Canada at a higher education institution (college/university) but you do not yet have the necessary level of English/French or the minimum required to obtain admission?

You should know that in Canada there are "language pathways", the pathway is the possibility of creating a route that allows a conditional admission to the desired college or university program by demonstrating that prior to the start of the program you will study the language with the same institution or a language institution allied to the college/university.

But how does it work? What are the benefits and disadvantages? In order to answer these questions, one must first take into account that in order to establish this "pathway" one must first choose the college or university and the program of study. After this, the possibilities of a pathway can be evaluated because a great variety of programs (especially master's programs with high demand and high competitiveness) do not allow this modality, in order to be accepted they must already have the required language level.

Once the program and the institution have been defined, the most common options for conditional admission (if the program and the institution allow it) are evaluated:

1. Take it with a language institution allied to the college or university where the English or French language courses are valid for conditional admission.

This option can normally be done online (from your home country) or in person if you wish. In order to quote how much the cost and time would be, the language institution performs an initial test to evaluate the level and based on the level required by the college or university the institute will indicate the estimated weeks needed and therefore the cost.

Doing it online is the most economical way to do it, since, in person, you will not be able to work in Canada until you have completed the pathway and started your college or university program.

For the enrollment process, you must first apply to the language institution and once you are admitted to the pathway, you can apply to the college or university. In other words, instead of submitting the academic IELTS or toefl IBT test to the college or university you submit this letter and you will get the conditional admission letter.

Once you finish your pathway either online or on-site, you must present your diploma of completion and grades to the college or university to receive a new letter of admission with no conditions and start your program successfully.

2. Do it with the same college or the same university, this is undoubtedly the most expensive option because in order to assign you a level you must present the IELTS of Academic type or the toefl of IBT type and based on this the institution indicates you the cost and the time of the pathway. A level can cost up to 5 thousand Canadian dollars, that is to say, they handle prices similar to studying a main program of higher studies.

For the enrollment process you must first choose the program of study and after that meet all the admission requirements, also as I indicated in the previous paragraph will have to take the language test accepted by the institution (usually the academic IELTS or IBT toefl) and based on this the college or university will give you the conditional acceptance with the time of the language plus the time of the program of study, Normally this option is 100% presential, once the pathway is finished the institution will give you an unconditional letter of admission and you will be able to start your higher education program without any problem.

The greatest benefit of the pathway is that it allows you to obtain conditional admission to start the visa process without having the language required by the university or college. However, if you wish to do it in person, you must take into account that you will not be able to work for the duration of the pathway and if you come with your family, the couple will not be able to apply for the open work permit until the language conditions are removed and you are given a letter without conditions. For students who have high economic resources and travel to Canada without family, the pathway is undoubtedly a benefit that Canada offers them to get closer to their dreams.
