Learn about the 2025 limit for parental and grandparent sponsorship in Canada and your alternative planLearn about the 2025 limit for parental and grandparent sponsorship in Canada and your alternative plan

This 2025, the Canadian government changed the admissions limit for Parent Grandparent Sponsorship (PGP) from 15,000 to 25,000. There will now be applications from 2024 that will be processed and also from this year. Even so, it is necessary to have an alternative plan, as there is a limit on admissions anyway.

Certainly, there is an alternative plan, the Super Visa program, which offers permanent residents and/or Canadian citizens the possibility to bring their parents or grandparents to Canada, for a maximum of 5 consecutive years. This is certainly a good option. So read with me to the end to learn more about the approach to the PGP and how to apply for the Super Visa. Let's get started!

IRCC's Approach to Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship in 2025

On March 22, 2025, the Canadian government gazetted an increase in the admissions limit. Initially, the focus was on processing Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship (PGP) applications that were submitted in 2024, but then modified the limit to process new applications for this year, increasing from 15,000 to 25,000 landings.

Recall that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) set a reduction in permanent residence targets by 20% for this year, with a projected 24,500 landings under the PGP. However, there is now a better chance of succeeding in this sponsorship, plus Canadian citizens and permanent residents who submitted interest forms for the 2020 intake, and have not yet received an invitation to apply, will have this opportunity when the PGP opens the 2025 intake.

However, family members in Canada who are unable to sponsor their parents and grandparents under the PGP this year can bring them over under the Super Visa. Although this program does not offer permanent residency, it does allow for extended stays.

Applying for the Super Visa in 2025

In Canadian immigration, there are often alternatives to government changes and regulations, so it's time to think about solutions.

This visa is useful for long periods of stay, and with it citizens and permanent residents can sponsor their parents and grandparents allowing them to enjoy temporary residency for up to five consecutive years with departure and return for an additional five years for a total of 10 years.

What is required to obtain the Super Visa?

The requirements for the Super Visa are divided between the sponsor and the family member.

The sponsor must:

  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or registered Indian.
  • Living in Canada.
  • Be 18 years of age or older.
  • Meet minimum income requirements according to family size.
  • Promise financial support during the family member's stay.

The family member must:

  • To be admissible in Canada.
  • Apply for the Super Visa from outside Canada.

Recommendations for applying for the Super Visa

It is important to keep in mind that any request for immigration process in Canada involves planning and being well informed about the laws, regulations and measures of the country so that everything is done correctly.

Therefore, the applicant must prepare his or her documentation very well. This involves making sure to have all the necessary papers and documents, translating them into English or French, as well as complying with the criteria and conditions of the Super Visa program before applying.

If in the process the applicant does not know any step or is not sure how to take it, the best thing to do is to ask for a legal consultation with a specialized firm such as Immiland Canada. If you wish to take your case with a CICC regulated consultant, you can schedule an appointment with us here.

Please note that the Super Visa does not allow holders to work or study in Canada, nor to live permanently. It is a temporary stay visa with exit and re-entry for a total of 10 years. It is also important to know that if your family member wishes to stay with you for only 6 months or less, then he/she can apply to enter Canada as a regular visitor, instead of applying for a Super Visa. If you have any questions about this, please contact us.

I hope this topic will bring him closer to his parents and grandparents and they can meet this 2025 in Canada.

Thanks for reading, see you in a future blog!
