Digital Nomad Visa by the end of 2023

Canada is embracing its position as a leader in the global search for technology talent with a strong emphasis on innovation and attracting highly skilled individuals. The government has even put forward a multi-faceted strategy that aims to not only meet the demand for skilled jobs, but also lay the groundwork for future opportunities. It is important to note that these efforts are still in their early stages, so it is advisable to follow this progress closely to reap the benefits as they develop.

Digital nomad visa: Canada's new approach to remote work

The concept of digital nomad is gaining ground in the socioeconomic life of human beings and its denomination refers to someone who can perform their work remotely from anywhere in the world, which represents a huge advantage in the management of time and money. A detailed explanation of this modality can be found in Youtube videos focusing on a variety of vloggers, in which there are a multitude of testimonials, tutorials, interviews and more related to information aimed at digital nomads. Canada has not been left behind with the implementation of this new style of doing work and is adopting this trend to offer it to potential remote employees.

What does it take to be a digital nomad?

Under current government regulations, digital nomads only require visitor status to move to Canada and work remotely for up to six months for a foreign employer. However, the government is actively considering additional measures in order to improve the country's attractiveness to these types of workers. These possible measures include:

1. Issue open work permits for high-demand professions.

2. Identify reputable Canadian employers and expedite work permit processes for their foreign workforce.

3. Collaborate with public and private entities to create attractive policies.

4. Strengthen existing initiatives such as the Star-up Visa Program and the Global Skills Strategy.

5. Encourage digital nomads to explore job opportunities in Canada.

In this regard, the Canadian government is evaluating ways to introduce digital nomad visas specifically for professionals in information technology (IT) and other relevant fields. Below, we invite you to explore the existing options in this context.

  • The global skills strategy: this simplifies the path to the nomad visa and aims to attract international talent to the country and aligns well with the concept of the digital nomad visa.

Employers can take advantage of this program to bring in top global talent. Immiland Canada can guide them through the process from start to finish.

In general, this program strives to process work permit applications within two weeks. Once the worker has the documents and information he/she needs from the employer, he/she should do the following with his/her family:

  • Apply online from outside Canada.
  • Send a complete application.
  • Include a medical examination (if necessary).
  • Include police certificates (if necessary).
  • Include certified translations of documents that are not in English or French.
  • Pay processing fees.
  • Submit biometric results within 2 weeks of application submission (if required).

You can view the forms and other information about the program at: get faster processing from the official government website.

  • The Entrepreneur Visa Program: This program encourages innovation and simplification of nomad visa applications and offers pathways to qualify for permanent residency. Although this program is not specifically designed for digital nomad visas, it can be used to obtain an initial work permit and, subsequently, permanent residency in Canada.

To be eligible for this program applicants must:

  • Have a qualified business.
  • Obtain a letter of support from a designated organization.
  • Meet language requirements.
  • Bring enough money to settle down.

Learn more about the process from the official website.

  • H-1B specialty occupation visa holders: review of current status. It is important to note that while there was an open work permit for H-1B specialty occupation visa holders in the United States, the cap of 10,000 applicants was quickly reached in less than 48 hours on July 16, 2023. Currently, this option is temporarily on hold and no official announcement has been made about upcoming invitations. However, this remains an interesting area to monitor for possible future opportunities.

More information on eligibility criteria, H-1B licenses, H-1B e-registration process, application processing and more can be found on the official U.S. government website.

  • Digital nomad work permits for current applicants: the IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) has promised to introduce innovative options for digital nomad visas by the end of 2023.
