Visa Denied / ATIP and Reconsideration Services

If your visa was denied you will have the option to view the reasons for denial through an ATIP or if you believe the immigration officer made a mistake you may opt for a reconsideration.

What is an ATIP?

ATIP (Access to Information and Privacy) is a tool that gives you the opportunity to access the records of Canadian government institutions, making ATIP the ideal tool to know in detail the reason why the Government of Canada has rejected your visa. This tool only includes the rejection notes of the immigration officer who reviewed your application, so it is necessary to perform an in-depth analysis of your application to know how your profile can be improved.

Restrictions for this document

It can only be applied for by a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or any other person residing in Canada.
You can only request information about your application.
If you want information about a third party, you need to be authorized to do so.

Requirements for this document

This service has only three fundamental requirements:

Access to a valid e-mail account.
Digital copy of the Letter of Refusal and other documents you wish to attach to your application.
Credit card to make the payment.

What is a reconsideration?‍

A reconsideration is a request to an immigration officer to review a rejected immigration application.

When to request a reconsideration?

A person may choose to request reconsideration of a rejected immigration application if he or she believes that the immigration officer made a mistake. A reconsideration may be requested on an application for temporary residence (i.e., visitor visa, study permit or work permit) or for permanent residence.

We only recommend doing so if you have been previously advised to request a reconsideration as it is often not useful for all types of rejections.

Process time

The immigration officer has a high level of discretion in deciding your reconsideration and, in most cases, there is a low probability of success. They also have discretion in processing times so it can take weeks to months with no clear standard. However, if your request for reconsideration is accepted, your immigration application may be approved. Although there are no rules or fees for requesting reconsideration, this application is less complicated and less expensive to prepare compared to other options.
