Affidavit - Relationship Witness

An Affidavit of Witnessing Relationship is used to prove that a relationship is genuine when the couple does not have sufficient documents and/or evidence to prove the duration of their relationship.
In short, a third party will declare that he/she knows about the relationship and attests to it. Please note that the minimum period of cohabitation in a common-law relationship must be 1 year.
The Affidavit - Witness of relationship can be of common-law or marriage. The common-law relationship is used when the couple does not have the evidence requested by the Government of Canada to prove the genuineness of the relationship. The marriage witness, on the other hand, is used when the couple is newly married and has been married for 4 months.
Benefits of this affidavit
- It is an extra element of evidence for the relationship.
- Strengthens the authenticity of the union when there is insufficient evidence.
