NATIONAL ECONOMY

New Zealand has an open, modern, and diversified economy based on major sectors such as services, manufacturing, agriculture, and international trade. The country is strongly export-oriented, particularly in products such as food, dairy products, meat, timber, and other goods and services.

The service sector plays a key role in the economy, alongside industries such as construction, technology, health care, education, tourism, and commerce. New Zealand also maintains trade relations with various international markets, which contributes to the country's economic activity.

In 2026, the economy is in a recovery phase. GDP grew 1.7% in the year ending in June 2026, while GDP for the June quarter rose 0.2%. Construction was one of the main sectors driving growth during that quarter.

For those looking to study and gain international experience, New Zealand offers a job market linked to sectors such as healthcare, construction, technology, professional services, education, tourism, and commerce, although opportunities and conditions depend on each person’s profession, experience, city, and immigration status.

HEALTH

New Zealand has a health care system that combines public and private services. Most essential services are publicly funded for people who meet the eligibility requirements.

For international students, access to the public healthcare system is generally not the same as it is for citizens or residents, so they must have adequate health insurance while they are studying. This insurance must cover, among other things, medical care in New Zealand, travel, repatriation, and certain situations related to illness or death.

The system includes primary care, hospitals, specialists, emergency services, and pharmacies. Students can use public or private health care services depending on their coverage and insurance terms.

DRIVING LICENSE

International students and visitors may drive in New Zealand using a valid foreign driver's license, provided they meet the requirements set by the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA). If the license is not in English, you must carry an official English translation or an International Driving Permit (IDP).

Currently, a foreign driver's license can be used for up to 18 months from the date of the last entry into the country. Effective November 1, 2026, this period will be 12 months.

If you plan to stay in New Zealand for a longer period, you can convert your foreign driver’s license to a New Zealand driver’s license. The requirements depend on the country where the license was issued. For countries not on the list of exempt countries, you are generally required to pass a written and a practical test.

Important: In New Zealand, people drive on the left side of the road, so it is essential to familiarize yourself with local traffic rules before driving.
