Change of DLI
When to request a change of designated academic institutions - DLI
You can change your DLI while your study visa application is in progress or after landing in Canada and obtaining your study permit at the airport.
Conditions for requesting a change:
Before changing schools or programs, you must meet all the conditions of your study permit. This means that you must be:
- Enrolled in a designated learning institution (DLI) and
- Actively study while in Canada.
When should a DLI change be requested:
- If you are a postsecondary education student changing schools.
- If you have a Co-op work permit and have changed from a post-secondary school to another co-op program, or
- If you need to change the conditions of your study permit.
What happens if the program change is not reported to IRCC:
If you change schools and do not inform IRCC the educational institution will inform you, you will appear as not registered to study.
If this happens:
- You are in breach of the conditions of your study permit.
- You may be asked to leave the country.
- This may prevent you from coming to Canada in the future.
For example, you may not be approved for another study or work permit in the future.
If your study permit application has been approved and you change your DLI before arriving in Canada, you will need to submit a new study permit application with a new letter of acceptance and pay a new application fee.
