Two documents you must have when applying for a job in Canada

Are you applying for a work permit—whether you're in Canada or abroad—and all you have is a job offer? Be careful! There are additional documents you need to include to make your application compelling.

Many of these permits are denied because two key elements that reflect the applicant's true potential are missing: previous experience and academic qualifications related to the job they will be performing.

In this blog post, I'll tell you what to do to increase your chances of getting your work permit approved. Read to the end and take note of each point.

Two Key Elements for a Work Permit

1. Previous Experience - NOC/TEER

It is essential to remember that every occupation in Canada is governed by a TEER code (which is essential for immigration processes, permanent residency and work permits, and for verifying the average salary).

Note: The NOC (National Occupational Classification) is Canada’s official system for classifying jobs.

Whereas TEER (Training, Education, Experience, and Responsibilities) are the current categories (0–5) used to assess the training, education, experience, and responsibilities required for each occupation.

When you look up your specific code, you will find the section titled“Employment Requirements.” If this section states that specific experience and education are required to perform your job, you are required to prove that you meet those requirements. Otherwise, the immigration officer will have no basis for approving your application.

For example: Code 10011 – Human Resources Managers

Job Requirements: A bachelor's degree in business administration or the humanities, or professional training in human resources, is required. Several years of prior experience in human resources are required, and in some cases, CHRP certification is required, depending on the employer.

How do you demonstrate your previous experience?

To demonstrate your prior experience, you must attach letters from previous employers detailing your duties, employment contracts, or letters from clients if you have worked as a freelancer.

These documents must clearly certify that the duties performed in the past are the same as those you will perform in Canada.

Do you know if your application is ready to be submitted to IRCC? If you're not sure, it's best not to take any chances. At Immiland Law, we offer a Pre-Submission Application Review service.

Upon request, our legal team will act as a second set of eyes to review your entire file, ensuring that no details are missing and that your application is properly prepared before it reaches the immigration authorities.

2. Academic studies related to the job

Evidence from studies is a necessary requirement. Simply describing your academic background is not enough for the immigration officer. The officer wants to verify that you meet the educational level required by the TEER system for that position in Canada.

You must always include your university degree, technical diploma, or vocational training certificate as legal proof, translated into English or French by a certified translator; otherwise, it will not be valid with IRCC.

Clarification Regarding WES: Unlike permanent residency applications, a credential evaluation (ECA/WES) is not required for a work permit, unless the specific TEER code or the employer explicitly requires it.

If you follow these recommendations, it is much more likely that the officer will approve your work permit.
