What is the B-2 Tourist Visa?
The B-2 tourist visa allows foreign nationals to enter the United States temporarily for tourism, family visits, medical treatment, or recreational activities. This visa is a non-immigrant category and does not allow for work or study in the U.S.
Requirements to Apply for a B-2 Visa
In order to apply for a B-2 visa, the applicant must meet the following requirements:
Reason for the Visit:
- Tourism or vacation.
- Visiting family or friends.
- Medical treatment.
- Participate in social, cultural or sporting events (as a spectator).
- Enrollment in short courses of study (not academic or for credit).
2. Proof of Intent to Return to Country of Origin:
- Evidence of strong ties to the country of origin, such as employment, family, property or ongoing studies.
3. Proof of Funds:
- Documentation showing that you are able to cover the cost of travel and stay in the U.S.
4. Valid Passport:
- The passport must be valid at least 6 months after the date of planned departure from the U.S.
Completed Form DS-160:
- Mandatory online form for nonimmigrant visas, along with the receipt of the application fee ($185).
6. Interview at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate:
- Generally required for applicants between the ages of 14 and 79. Applicants must demonstrate the legitimate purpose of the trip and their intention to return to their country.
Required Documents
- Valid passport. It is recommended to have a solid travel history showing that you have visited other countries in the past and have respected the seasonality of your visits.
- Confirmation of Form DS-160.
- Receipt of payment of the application fee.
- A recent passport size photo (according to visa requirements).
- Letter of intent explaining the purpose of the trip.

- Employment letters.
- School enrollment.
- Property ownership.
- Travel itinerary (flight and hotel reservations, if applicable).
- Medical documentation, if the trip is for medical treatment.
Processing Times
The processing time for a B-2 visa may vary depending on the country and the embassy or consulate where the application is made. Typical times are:
- Interview appointment scheduling: 2-8 weeks (depending on local demand).
- Administrative processing after interview: Generally 7-10 business days, but may be extended if additional review is required.
Note: It is important to verify specific times at the nearest consulate or embassy.
Important Considerations
- The B-2 visa does not guarantee entry into the U.S. The final decision is made by the immigration officer at the port of entry.
- The maximum length of stay is usually 6 months, but is subject to the approval of the immigration officer.
- You cannot work or study in the U.S. under a B-2 visa.
