Education for minors in Canada

Education for minors in CanadaEducation for minors in Canada

The school year in Canada starts the last week of August or the first week of September, depending on whether the school is private or public. In this case, I will talk about the schools in Quebec that depend on the government (public).

In order to register your child, you must go to the Commission Scolaire closest to your place of residence, the name of the institution translated into English would be School Commission. This institution is in charge of enrolling children in the Canadian education system. After registration , they will assign you to the nearest available school for your child.

Some schools receive children as early as Pre-Kindergarten (4 years old), if not, you have the option to enroll your child in the day care center of your choice. The province offers government subsidized day care centers at a cost of approximately CAD $9 per day and private day care centers with different costs, from CAD $28 to CAD $42 per day.

The school is free of charge and there is only an annual tuition fee (between CAD $65 to CAD $100 approximately). This fee varies according to the school and the level of the child. The school bus is also free, but this service depends on how far your home is from the school.

School schedules vary according to the school or grade, but normally start at 8 A.M. until 3 P.M. In the event that parents are unable to pick up their children due to work schedules, the schools offer day care services, the cost per day is approximately CAD $9.

When it comes to the cost of school supplies, they vary according to the level your child is in, and the higher the level, the higher the cost increases. For example, for a third grader, you can expect to spend about $80 CAD per year on school supplies, not taking into account the school bag and lunch bag.

Snacks and lunch are at the parents' expense. If you like, you can send your child's lunch or pay between CAD $11 to CAD $16 for the service.

I hope all this information is helpful to you! We at Immiland Canada look forward to hearing from you.
