What is a closed work permit in Canada?
A closed work permit is a document that allows a foreigner to work in Canada in a specific position and for a specific employer.
This permit is sub-divided into two types:
- Closed work permits exempt from LMIA.
- Closed work permits with positive LMIA.
Restrictions for this type of visa
- The closed work permit with a positive LMIA requires a Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) to be granted.
- The LMIA exempt closed work permit requires a validated Labor Offer.
- It is subject to a specific employer, activity or region, so if any of these conditions change, the permit is not valid.
- A Police Certificate and/or medical examination (if applicable) may be required.
Requirements for this type of visa
Depending on the type of closed permit you are applying for are the additional requirements you will need to submit. In general, you must:
- Obtain a Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) or obtain a job offer and/or employment contract with the employer.
- Temporary resident visa (if applicable).
- Demonstrate that you have enough money to care for yourself and your family members for a reasonable period of time.
