What is required to have a student visa in Canada?

The study permit is a document that authorizes you to study in Canada the study program of your choice or language courses lasting more than 6 months.

Most countries require a study permit to study in Canada.

Please note that the study permit must be applied for before traveling to Canada and is not a visa. In other words, it does not allow you to enter Canada. To enter Canada you need a visitor's visa or an electronic travel authorization (eTA). In addition, you should know that if you apply for a study permit from outside Canada, the approval of this permit includes the approval of a visitor's visa.

Depending on where you live and certain requirements, you may be able to obtain your study permit in as little as 20 calendar days. This is thanks to Student Direct Stream (SDS). However, some applications may take longer.

Restrictions for this type of visa

  • You may also need a visitor's visa or an electronic travel authorization (eTA).
  • It is expensive.
  • Education in Canada is in English or French.
  • You may need a work permit with Co-op if your program of study requires it.
  • May require a Police Certificate and/or a medical examination.

Requirements for this type of visa

  • Be enrolled in a Designated Learning Institution (DLI).
  • Demonstrate that you have enough money to pay your first year's tuition and living expenses. If you are traveling with additional family members consider that you will also need to demonstrate living expenses for them.
  • Satisfy an immigration officer that you have strong ties to your home country.
  • Satisfy an immigration officer that you will leave Canada at the end of your stay.
