How to build a Canadian-style CV
If you are thinking of migrating to Canada via work, you must have a job offer. That is why we want to share with you how to make your resume Canadian style.
What should a CV in Canadian format have?
- For a CV to be competitive in the job market, the candidate must try to attract attention in the first 11 - 30 seconds.
- The CV should not be longer than 2 pages
- Contact information should include
- email, phone and LinkedIn url
- a summary of experiences and skills
- The candidate should use keywords that describe the position the employer is seeking.
- Adjust cv depending on industry
- If social media/marketing/graphics make a CV that shows what you can do.
- What is your style? What palettes do you use?
- Use hyperlink to a portfolio for visual jobs
- Enter description of each previous job
- Job description should be related to the new position being sought.
- Deconstruct the job offer. Extract relevant information and then adapt it to the resume.
General information about CVs and job offers
- If the candidate has a lot of experience in different fields (IT and carpentry)
- Only extract information relevant to 1 of the jobs
- IT and carpenter = 2 different CVs
- Search for job offers on Indeed, LinkedIn, monster, job bank
- Go to job bank and contact the company directly because job bank discards people without papers in Canada.
- Learning the language-vocabulary of your job position
- Making a good impression at the first job interview
What should a Canadian format CV NOT have?
- Canada does not use photos, dates of birth or marital status.
- Do not put the address in the header but in the footer to give priority to contact information.
- Do not list reference information from former employers unless the new employer asks for that information.
- References is the final step in the hiring process.
- Education and courses
- Do not put expired courses (if more than 5 years have passed and it is not aligned or not relevant to the field).
- Education follows work experience
- Do not use acronyms if you are not internationally recognized.
- Ex; Industrial Organizational psychology instead of IO Psychology
- Do not search for job offers on Facebook or WhatsApp
- It is usually a scam
